Daphne Gnidium
Daphne Gnidium
The area is an artificial damp zone, situated between Fiumicino International Airport and the sea.  The area is surrounded by a large pine forest, populated by Italian stone pines (Pinus pinea) and has a ground cover of mediterranean maquis.  Among the plants, all those typical of the scrub can be found, like the Phillyrea (Phillyrea angustifolia), the Lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus), the Sage-leaved cistus (Cistus salvifolius), the Daphne gnidium, the Myrtle (Mirtus communis) and many others.
The stretch of water extends for many hectares and its walls are reinforced with concrete.  Its bed is closed on private property and is now used for angling : several ichthyic marine species survive, in fact, thanks to the good quantity of slat present in the Pond's waters.

As well as the Italian stone pine, may other types of tree are present, such as the Poplar, (Populus spp) and the Elm tree (Ulmis campestris).

In the direction of the sea, a vast sandy area can be found, where the vegetation is grassy, with an  halophile tendency - that is, a kind of vegetation that likes salty areas and that is able to resist against sea water and sea winds.

Here, a vast reed thicket has developed, rich with Phragmites Phragmites spp and Arundo donax, which, together with the rushes that can be found in a nearby little, sandy depression, represent the most important part of the marshy vegetation in the area.
