The
first itinerary (the via Severiana)
The first itinerary proposed is the most pristine
and consists of a walk along the "Via Severiana". It begins from Castel
Fusano Square and ends at Lido di Castel Porziano Road, and it is crossed
by Cristoforo Colombo Street. If one has only a half-day of free-time we
advise you to cover just a short portion of the road.
There are three accesses to it.
The FIRST ACCESS (1° accesso) is in Villa di Plinio Square.
Coming from Rome along Cristoforo Colombo Street, you reach Cristoforo
Colombo Square, then turn right to Lutazio sea-front, pass the little bridge
crossing the pond canal and turn immediately right on Pescatori's Street.
Go straight until you reach a big crossing and turn right again, reaching
Castel Fusano Square, where you can leave the car in a big area located
there (there is no a reserved parking for disabled people). During work
days it is also possible to park in Villa di Plinio Square, just a little
further up the road.
The SECOND ACCESS (2° accesso) is in Cristoforo Colombo Street.
In this case, we reach Cristoforo Colombo Street and then, following
the compulsory roundabout sign, we come back towards Rome, getting into
the side lane. After the first traffic light, turn right on Cinghiali Square,
then turn left on Castel Porziano Road, finally reaching Severiana Square,
where we find the second entrance. Parking here is more difficult because
you must leave the car in Cristoforo Colombo side lane.
The THIRD ACCESS (3° accesso) is in Lido di Castel Porziano Street,
where, there is a big parking area, even if there is no a reserved parking
for disabled people with wheel-chairs. The "Via Severiana" is a beautiful
naturalistic itinerary, opening up into the mediterranean maquis, along
the Roman Coastline. It is either possible to go from one end to the other,
and then to go back by Villa di Plinio Road, which is paved but is closed
to vehicular traffic, or come back by the same way we came "Via Severiana
Road is a hard packed dirt road
Please note: recommended itinerary
We advise disabled people with wheel-chair
or motor problems to leave the car at the third access and cover the route
back to the second access.
This part, which is the nicest, can be covered by people, who are fit
(the way is flat, without slopes and is about 5 Km. there and back) even
by themselves.
If you get tired, you can came back through the asphalted street, running
parallel to "Via Severiana", that is closed to traffic vehicular (Villa
di Plinio road).
As regards the first part of "Via Severiana", disabled people should
consider that it is very disconnected. Therefore you need to proceed with
an experienced helper.
Moreover, arriving at the end of the stretch, you will find a big trunk,
which cannot be stepped over by disabled people, in order to cross Cristoforo
Colombo Street and continue the itinerary. In this case it would be necessary
to come back through the same way and go to the other ways-in.
WE RECOMMEND THIS ITINERARY.
BE CAREFUL! Disabled people must consider that, being a seaside
area, the soil is sandy. It could therefore give, during very dry periods,
some problems in case of crossing no asphalted itineraries.
The Ruins at Villa di Plinio
Walking on "via Severiana" we'll see a sign post bearing,
upon common n. 16. Turning, right if coming from access n.2 or left if
coming from access n.3, you reach Plinio's
Villa, which will come into plain view.
The second itinerary
If you don't like to walk on the ground, you
can anyway choose another itinerary enabling you to walk in the pinewood
on asphalted street far from the town traffic. Walking along Lutazio sea-front
we come to Mediterraneo Square, once there turn right to Mediterraneo's
Street and leave the car: there we can find a pleasant stand that serves
drinks and some benches, where we can sit and eat our own sandwiches, if
we buy something to drink. The same stand has food for sale.
Along the sides of the street there are some dirt lanes that lead to
inner glades in the pinewood and are usable even by disabled people with
wheel-chairs.
Once in Villa di Plinio square you can choose:
-
to come back through Mediterraneo's street (about 1 km.);
-
to go on to Circuito's street which runs into Cristoforo Colombo street
and then turn back (approx. 1,5 km.);
-
to go on for the first part of "via Severiana" and then come back, because
of a fallen tree trunk lying on the ground that prevents to crossing Cristoforo
Colombo street.
BE CAREFUL! This part is very difficult for people with wheel-chairs.
They must be accompanied by an expert helper.
