The area, denominated
also estate of "Castel di Guido", is situated on the north-east hill reliefs
of the Fiumicino's Airport. The hills are primarily constituted by sands
and clays determining for the realisation of an arid micro-climate that
develops the growth of a thick Mediterranean bush. The bush in which we
can find myrtle (Calicotome villosa)
and lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus), as going down along the
slopes it increases gradually in height till becoming high holm oak
(Quercus ilex) and phillyrea (phillyrea
angustifolia). Going still downhill, we find the wood of turkey
oak (Quercus cerris) till arriving to the valley where we find
vegetation binded to cool and humid climates such as the bay oak
(Quercus robur), the white poplar (Popolus
alba) and the laurel (Larus nobilis).
The wildlife of the zone includes mammals such as the wild boar, the porcupine
(Hystrix cristata), the hare (Lepus capensis) and
birds such as the black kite (Milvus Migrans), the buzzard
(Buteo buteo) and the hen harrier (Circus cyaenus)
during the migratory period. Besides we can see the bee-eater (Merops
apiaster) nesting in the sandy areas. The wildlife includes also reptiles
such as the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) and the
whip snake (Coluber Viridiflavus). Recently LIPU (Italian Society for the
Protection of Birds) has realised a natural oasis inside the Estate
of Castel of Guido.
