There was a marsh...

Since the beginning of the 20th Century, the entire plain to the north of the Mouth of the Tiber has been covered by an immense swamp area that extends for kilometers: this is the area of the  Maccarese Ponds and Pagliete.

This salt-water environment received its water supply both from aquifer water and from the periodical floods coming from the Tiber.  This district was completely reclaimed between 1920 and 1930; the only natural damp zone remaining is that of the mouth of the old effluent of the swamp: the Pond of Focene, an area of which, is an important part of the Natural Oasis of Macchiagrande.

As for the damp zone of the Maccarese Ponds, we must point out that the environment is completely artificial, comprised of stretches of water, embanked by waterproof material.

The Pond at the Coccia di Morto Estate, which is large and full of life, was built in cement and is presently used for angling activities.
