Surroundings of the Ponds
Surroundings of the Ponds
The ponds, of artificial origin, were created by the simple raising of the embankments in beaten earth, carried out by the ex-Maccarese Estate and can be found in an area between Fregene and Maccarese in a zone surrounded by cultivated fields.

The ponds, that get their water supply through a system of wells and ducts that allow renewal and and correct water-level, are of a depth that varies between 1.5 and 2.5 metres and are still rich with fish.

The banks of the ponds are without degradant beaches, and are furnished with reed-thicket vegetation, among which the Swamp cane (Phragmites australis) and the Typha (Typha spp.) are, thanks to their dimensions, the predominant species. The first is the typical cane with a plume at the top; the latter has a cylinder-shaped inflorescence and is used also for decorative purposes.

The conformation of one of the bigger ponds, which is endowed with spit, dense reed-thickets and sheltered islets, is particularly suitable for nesting of various species of birds.  Around the perimeter, the vegetation consists of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and several types of Willow (Salix alba), easily distinguishable due to their long, flexible braches.  Bramble bushes (Rubus fruticosus) also very extend widely over the area, as well as numerous Reeds (Juncus sp).
